To make the engine crank over without starting, you can switch off either the gas or the spark at the appropriate time. It is preferable to deactivate the fuel system, or both the fuel and the ignition systems, when testing the starting motor. Always be sure that the fuel system is turned off in fuel-injected engines before starting the engine.
